your money or your life - front cover imageIf you’re keen to save money but not sure where to start, Your Money or Your Life is an excellent starting point.

Most personal finance books are also full of information about making extra money. This isn’t. Instead, it concentrates on digging out your personal fundamental values and helping you realign them.

The idea behind the book is that most of us get into trouble with money because we’re emotionally lost in space, lacking strong central values, and our problems are connected to a chronic lack of direction: we work to earn money, not because we love or even like it… in fact we often hate it.

It’s enlightening stuff if a bit extreme at times. It uses some genuinely unorthodox methods for exposing the truth about your life, defining values in a refreshing way and giving them a healthy financial perspective. The book sets out to re-orientate your relationship with money, not the way you manage it, so goes  a lot deeper than most money-saving guides.

If it all sounds a bit hippyish, it is. But in a good way. It gets very sentimental at times, a bit sick-making for UK consumption. But the information in it seems solid as a rock. It’s about finding the best way to live your life instead of living the way other people expect you to. It’s full of fascinating anecdotes and rich in detail, a good, long read that’s jam packed with food for thought. If most personal finance books leave you cold, give this one a go. It might inspire you to change your life forever.

  • hard-hitting psychological insights to help you change the way you think about money
  • plenty of refreshingly unorthodox ideas to mull over
  • support giving money the right amount of priority in your life
  • thoughts about how to make peace with your financial past and lay ghosts to rest
  • a variety of fascinating practical exercises to reveal your true relationship with money
  • how to evaluate your expenses in a new way to reveal surprising facts about yourself
  • ways to minimise spending and maximise the value of your time
  • re-evaluating your job
  • finding your tipping point, where  invested income can cover your living expenses
  • key questions to ask yourself

If you’re struggling with your finances or just fed up with the unreasonable stranglehold money exerts, give it a go and see. Here’s a link to the book on Amazon marketplace, where you can pick a used copy up for a few quid: Your Money or Your Life.
