Trash or treasure? ‘Freecycle’ your unwanted stuff!

By Kate Naylor on March 30th, 2011 at 9:00am in Home & Garden

One person’s junk is another person’s treasure. If you don’t need half a ton of sandstone paving it’s expensive rubbish to get rid off. If it’s exactly what you happoen to need, it’s far from being a load of rubbish. It’s a lifesaver. That’s the principle on which freecycle works.

The idea is to reduce the amount of perfectly good stuff we throw away in landfill sites every year. By doing so you save money by recycling things that’d otherwise be thrown away. And it’s great for getting hold of the things you need for absolutely nothing, whether it’s furniture, a car, a bike, clothes, a tent, carpeting… you name it!

Freecycle originated in the US but migrated over here in late 2009. It’s a brilliant way to bring together millions and millions of people who want stuff with the people who can’t wait to get rid of it! In fact the freecycle mission statement is To build a worldside gifting movement that reduces waste, saves precious resources and eases the burden on our landfills, while enabling members to benefit from the strangth of a larger community

Take a look online and you’ll probably find a local freecycle group near you. Localness is key because it means transport and postage costs are kept to a minimum too, cutting the expense of delivery and the damage caused by transporting goods all over the place when there’s no real need.
