I bet you didn’t know that you should be thanking Asa Candler, one of the founders of Coca-Cola, every time you use a discount code to get money off an online purchase. Why, you ask?. Well quite simply because he’s the guy that started the whole coupon craze waaaay back in 1888 by giving away over 8.5 million free bottles of Coke to everyone that handed over a paper ticket. That’s what helped turn Coca-Cola into a household name from the very beginning.

And I bet you didn’t know that for every hour spent searching for discount codes on the internet an average saving of £65 is made in total, not too bad ey? In fact while they only seem like a few meaningless letters and numbers to us, discount codes have been making some pretty big waves on the internet over the past few years boasting impressive growth numbers of around 263% in 2008 – 2009 alone, resulting in an estimated 88.2 million people using or would use a discount code online in 2011.

But even though this infographic traces coupon usage right the way back to the late eighteen hundreds, it’s only in the last decade, and very much due to the rise of the internet, that these masters of money saving have really been able to spread their wings. 332 billion coupons distributed in America alone in 2010, 263% year on year redemption growth, £3 billion saved a year purely from the use of online discount codes and vouchers! These are some extremely impressive numbers and with analysts projecting that more than 97 million online consumers in the US alone will redeem a discount code or coupon in 2013 it’s clear that these dons of discount aren’t going any where fast.
