Last winter my friend Lavinia hired a car and we set off, just after the snow had melted, for a charity shop frenzy in Tunbridge Wells. It peed down – all a bit of a ‘mare – so we left early, bundling down the country roads near Battle dodging potholes. Inevitably we hit one, hidden under a leftover patch of snow. Luckily we were only doing thirty but we hit it at exactly the wrong angle and the front left wheel just about came off.

Thank goodness Lavinia has AA Breakdown cover or we’d have been stuffed. We limped into a lay-by in the middle of nowhere, in the growing winter dusk, and settled in to wait for the AA man. Who arrived a mere twenty minutes later, probably because we were two ladies on our own without a big, burly man to look after us (LOL!).

And what a nice man he was. The hire car was brand new and the spare wheel jibbly-thing that you use to prise it out of the boot was cunningly hidden, as was the tool kit. We’d never have managed to change the wheel on our own. He was charming, professional, friendly and fast, getting us back on the road in less than quarter of an hour.
