20 guaranteed ways to waste money!

a pile of coinsWe’re always wittering on about saving money. But looking at how to waste money is just as useful! Here are my top twenty ways to fritter away your cash.

  1. leave the lights burning all over the house, providing a visible beacon from outer space
  2. leaving the heating blasting out at full power on in every room when you only use one room at a time, warming up empty fresh air at a ridiculous cost
  3. wasting food, doing your bit to add to a waste food mountain that already makes Everest look like a mere zit
  4. driving to and from the corner shop when it’s only a five minute, ten minute or half hour walk… then spending a small fortune every month on gym membership you don’t use
  5. forgetting about your smartphone contract, leaving it to run and run when swapping every now and again can save a large amount of dosh
  6. buying big brand consumer goods advertised on telly instead of own-brand stuff that’s just as good but costs a great deal less
  7.  going on a shoe buying frenzy then leaving them in your wardrobe for five years, having only worn them once. Plus every other ill-advised impulse buy you make. Think first, step away for half an hour, only buy if you’re dead certain you want, desire, need, love and will actually wear it!
  8. buying everyday stuff full price when there are zillions of cool discount codes to be had
  9. not bartering when you might as well give it a go. They can only tell you to bugger off, which is a bit embarrassing but won’t kill you
  10. throwing away perfectly good stuff when you could recycle it, re-purpose it or sell it on Ebay
  11. buying an expensive smartphone just for the kudos of the brand when a cheap one does the job perfectly well… if not better
  12. only paying off the minimum on your credit cards, thus awarding credit card companies and banks vast amounts of interest they really don’t deserve
  13. paying for mobile minutes you don’t use when you can get a contract that suits your needs better in the first place
  14. getting addicted to the whole coffee shop thing and spending a crazy three quid a pop on it
  15. letting your insurance roll over on automatic renewal when you could save loads of money shopping around for cheaper cover
  16. going to a high street opticians to buy new glasses when online opticians are often incredibly cheap and have a better range of specs to choose from – all you do is enter your prescription
  17. paying for hundreds of crap cable or satellite telly channels when Freeview gives you everything you need, including TV on demand
  18. being ‘loyal’ to a shop or bank or whatever when there are better deals elsewhere
  19. buying insurance you don’t need. If you don’t have any dependents, why on earth would you buy life insurance? Think about self-insuring, ie. bearing the risk yourself, rather than paying for stuff like credit card insurance
  20. leaving every gadget in your home on standby all day and night when switching off at the plug can save a whole load of cash
